The other side of school.

I spent eleven years on the other side of the teacher’s desk, more than 2,000 students, and a lot of what I watched happen to those kids is exactly the stuff nobody tells parents. So that’s what this show is. What school is actually doing to kids, and what you can do about it at home, whether your kids are still in school or you’re already homeschooling.

The Other Side of School podcast cover: Alanna Gallo smiling on a sofa, with the show title and Rethinking Education

On the show

Rethinking education, out loud.

Each episode takes one thing school has made normal and looks at it from the other side of the desk.

School

What school calls “fine”

Why so many kids hold it together all day and fall apart the minute they get home, and the homework that quietly takes over the evenings.

Screens

Screens, from inside the classroom

What a device on every desk was supposed to do for learning, and what a teacher actually watched it do.

Homeschooling

Secular homeschooling, as it really looks

Who is homeschooling now, why it looks nothing like the stereotype, and how families build a day that actually works.

Reading

Why kids stop reading for fun

Reading logs, levels and assessed reading, and how to give a kid back the books they used to love.

Your host

Hi, I’m Alanna.

I’m a former public school English teacher, the author of Uninfluenceable, and a secular homeschooling mom of four. My own kids have never been to public school, but a lot of the parents I write for have kids in it right now, so this show is for both of you (and for anyone still standing in the middle trying to decide).
